The Queensland Yamaha Junior Development Team (QYJDT) cashed in on another weekend’s racing to claim two overall victories at round two of the Shell Advance Sunshine State Series, held at a hot and sweaty Coolum Circuit on the Sunshine Coast.
40degree temperatures’ one day and a late finish the other, meant races had to be cut in order to get through the massive program. But that didn’t stop the boys going on a rampage of their own.
Joel Dinsdale (Bullet Bikes), in only his second race for the team, pulled down the overall victory in the 9 to 11 years 85cc with a 2-1 moto score. Dinsdale is getting better by the week after returning from injury and the weekend’s results show he almost back to his best. This class was due for three rounds, but the energy draining heat prevented competition going ahead as planned. And it was a Yamaha 1-2 with Northstar Yamaha racer Damien Harrison taking second overall on the day with 3-2 moto scores.
" I really like this track and even though the have made a few changes I think it is cool. My wrist is feeling good and I’m getting some more time on the bike so my speed and fitness are getting better as well," said the victorious Dinsdale.
Shaun Redhead (Pro Griffin Yamaha) showed why he is one of the most exciting riders in the country with some brilliant racing. Every time the "Wild Child" hits the track, there is always plenty of action and again he didn’t disappoint. Moto one saw Redhead pull the holeshot, kick it up a gear on the exit of the first turn and launch the massive forty metre jump on the opening lap. By the end of lap two, he had a 10second lead, only to go down. He remounted, charged back to the front, then crashed again before settling for a third. Moto two saw a slightly more sedate Redhead take a commanding victory and the overall for the day.
"I guess I went a bit crazy in the first race. When I crashed and then picked up, I just wanted to get back to the front as fast as I could, but I crashed again, so that was pretty dumb. But moto two was better and my lap times were about the same, so I guess smooth is fast," offered Redhead.
Scott Mann (Jimboomba Motorcycles) was certain to join his team mates on the podium after contesting the 12 to 13 years Mini Lites, but no points in the first race, after crossing the finish line second, from accidental damage to his exhaust caused it to go over in the post race noise test. But Mann shrugged that off, took victory in the second moto and then a fourth in the final race to finish 11th overall in class.
"No points in the first race wrecked my day, but I was happy with the way I raced today and felt really good on what is a rough track. I have 18 races to make up the points so there is plenty of time," said the determined Mann.
