Any time your bike is going over rough ground, you need to get your bum off the seat and work together with your bikes suspension to absorb the rough ground with the minimum of fuss. These are the points you will need top keep in mind to get your self in the best possible position on the bike.
Stand with your knees slightly bent, also bending from the waist with your head over the cross bar. You want your elbows up so your are in a strong position on the bike and your fingers over the controls ready for anything your might hit. Keep your vision up for better balance and for approaching obstacles.
Use your knees to grip the side of the bike in the seat/ tank junction, this will help you with side to side movement when things get real rough.
The best time to use this position is anywhere on the track or trail where the bumps are big enough to move the bike and unsettle the suspension. The more you get used to standing up, the better you will feel on the bike and the more control you will have over it.
An exercise might be to go to your local ride area and spend 5 full laps or 15 minutes up on the pegs and not sitting down.
